In 2018, the increase in the arrival of unaccompanied foreign minors put the protection system under strain, but the impact went further: these young people became trapped in a narrative marked by racism and hate speech. Menors lluny de casa (Far from Home), premiered on TV3’s 30 minuts program, was the first in-depth report on these boys and girls migrating alone, exploring their dreams and aspirations.
Through their daily lives and with open testimonies, the documentary gave voice to the main protagonists and gathered perspectives from all involved parties: administrations, educators, organizations, unions, lawyers, forensic doctors, and the Mossos d’Esquadra police force. A report that helped break stereotypes and stigmas surrounding the so-called Menas—young people forced to make adult decisions in a society that often turns its back on them.
